Reports Wizard Spreadsheet Upload Should Validate on Import

There is a useful spreadsheet download/upload process that staff can use to complete their reports in the Reports Wizard. We often have comment length restrictions, e.g. the comment must be between 300 and 800 characters in length.

The spreadsheet that is downloaded from the Reports Wizard will use Excel data validation to ensure that comments typed directly into the spreadsheet are the correct length. However, if the teacher pastes in a comment from elsewhere (e.g. having prepared it in Word), the data validation is removed. This is a known issue with Excel.

However, no further validation of comment lengths appears to take place when the spreadsheet is imported into iSAMS. In other words, if the pasted text is too short or too long, but all other required elements have been completed, the imported report is marked as Complete.

It would be far better if validation of the comment length (and, by extension, grades) took place at the point of import rather than, as now, the import process assuming that the comment has already passed validation.

    Hi Sarah,

    Thanks for the suggestion.

There is a current workaround, which involved locking the spreadsheet so users can't paste over the top.

We will be reviewing the import method in the future to see what we can do to improve this further though.

    Regards
