Improvement – School Dinner Daily Purchases Register Request for Additional Filtering Options

Suggestion for Improvement – School Dinner Daily Purchases Register

Priority: Important – Request for Additional Filtering Options

We would like to suggest an important improvement to the Payments > Purchases > School Dinners > Manage Registers section of School Spider.

Currently, when generating and printing the daily school dinner purchases register, the system only allows one filter to be applied at a time. We would greatly benefit from the ability to filter by class and then sort pupils alphabetically by surname within each class.

Current Issue:

At present, we are having to print two separate registers each day to manage the school dinner service. One is provided to the kitchen to identify the number of meals ordered and each pupil's menu choice. The other is used by a member of school staff to organise pupils into the order shown on the daily purchases register.

This is unnecessarily time-consuming for both school and kitchen staff. Pupils are already familiar with lining up in alphabetical/register order within their classes, but the current system does not allow us to print the dinner register in this format.

As a result, staff must spend additional time reorganising pupils to match the printed list before meals can be distributed. This also slows down kitchen staff, who need to locate each pupil on the register, confirm their meal choice and mark that their dinner has been received.

Suggested Improvement:

We would like School Spider to introduce the option to apply multiple filters or sorting options simultaneously, specifically:

  • Filter by class, so pupils are grouped into their respective classes.

  • Sort alphabetically by surname within each class, matching the order of the school's usual class registers.

  • Retain each pupil's selected meal option alongside their name.

  • Allow kitchen staff to use the same printed register to tick off meals as they are collected.

Benefits to Schools:

This relatively simple improvement would make a significant difference to the daily administration of school dinners. It would:

  • Reduce the need to print and manage multiple registers.

  • Save valuable staff time organising pupils before lunch.

  • Allow children to line up in their familiar class register order.

  • Help kitchen staff quickly identify pupils and their selected meals.

  • Make it easier to record which pupils have received their dinners.

  • Improve the overall efficiency and accuracy of the lunchtime service.

Why This Is Important:

School dinner service is a busy part of the school day, and even small administrative delays can have a significant impact when managing large numbers of pupils.

Being able to print one daily purchases register, grouped by class and ordered alphabetically by surname, with each pupil's meal choice clearly displayed, would provide a much more practical and efficient solution.

We feel this would be a valuable enhancement not only for our school but for many other schools using School Spider to manage their dinner service.

We would be grateful if this suggestion could be considered as a priority for a future system update, as it would make a genuine difference to the day-to-day running of our school dinner provision.
