we would like to be able to take a Register of our Sixth Form students when they have a free lesson, we work on lesson based registers and this would be really helpful.

The 'grouping' parts of a register rule are like an ordered series of filters, pupils are 'captured' by the first grouping that they match to, so you can register 'free' students in lesson slots by including a second grouping to the rule that will capture them, so, for example you could have...

In the Take A Register wizard for a lesson you will then have both a sets drop-down and a years drop-down, but the Years groups will only show the pupils who are not in any of the Sets with lessons at that time.
